Does your hair seem to stop growing?

Growth seems to have stopped... or has slowed down considerably. Even if you don't notice alopecia (hair loss), this is not normal.

First of all, it may be a sign of deficiencies or other internal factors that are important to monitor and correct. This is really the first ESSENTIAL step.

Then, to prevent this from turning into alopecia, it is better to take action and consult a hair and scalp specialist.

Certified trichologist, Anna tells you more about the factors that can cause this stagnation of hair growth.

Hair growth is a natural process that occurs in three phases :

  1. the anagen (growth) phase,
  2. the catagen phase (transition)
  3. the telogen phase (shedding).

The duration of each phase varies from person to person. On average, hair grows about 1 cm per month and falls out naturally after 2 to 3 years.

If your hair is no longer growing (or growing too slowly), this could be a sign of an underlying problem or a poor routine (particularly dietary or hair-related)

This is not normal but you can take action.

Here are several intrinsic factors:

  • Genetics: Genetic predisposition can influence the speed of hair growth.
  • Age: Hair growth naturally slows with age.
  • Hormones: Hormonal changes, such as puberty, menopause or andropause, can affect the hair growth cycle.
  • Stress: Chronic stress can have a negative impact on hair health and especially hair regrowth.
  • Nutritional deficiencies: Deficiencies in iron, zinc, B vitamins or essential fatty acids can slow hair growth.
  • Certain diseases: Diseases such as lupus, hypothyroidism or alopecia areata can also affect hair growth.

Other possible factors:

  • Lack of sleep: Insufficient sleep can disrupt the hair growth cycle.
  • Smoking: Smoking can weaken hair and hinder hair growth.
  • Poor blood circulation: Poor blood circulation to the scalp can slow hair growth.

Indeed, the way you take care of your hair directly impacts its growth.

  • Harsh hair care: Excessive use of chemicals like dyes, bleaches or perms can weaken hair and prevent it from growing.
  • Tight Hairstyles: Braids, buns, and ponytails that are too tight can pull on hair and cause damage.
  • Heat Tools: Excessive use of heat tools like hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons can also cause hair to become brittle and unable to grow.
  • Scalp saturation: whether it is pollution, dirt, possible oils or care residues, anything that accumulates on the scalp prevents it from functioning normally and can disrupt hair growth.

HAVE A GOOD HYGIENE LIFESTYLE
(your hair being a reflection of your “inner self”):

  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet , rich in vitamins and minerals, including iron, zinc, magnesium and B vitamins.
  • Drink enough water (about 1.5 liters per day) to hydrate the body and hair.
  • Manage stress , as it can be a major factor in hair loss.
  • Get enough sleep (about 7-8 hours per night) so that the body can rest and regenerate.
  • Avoid tobacco which can weaken hair and hinder its growth.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR HAIR

  • Use gentle shampoos and conditioners suited to your hair type (be careful with supermarket cosmetics with an alkaline pH)
  • Avoid tight hairstyles that can pull on the hair and make it fragile.
  • Limit the use of heat tools like hair dryers, straighteners and curling irons (and always use a heat protectant...)
  • Perform scalp massages to stimulate blood circulation and promote hair growth.
